Wāhine Options

There are a number of programs and opportunities for wāhine here at UniRec and the University of Waikato. Below you’ll find information on current offerings and weekly events. If you have any questions please contact us at [email protected].

There’s more opportunities available for wāhine students on campus and beyond with the Waikato Wāhine Movement. 


When: Second Wednesday of each month (13 September, 11 October, 15 November, 13 December) at 6.30pm

Where: UniRec High Performance Room

Who: UoW students and UniRec members

A free intro to the gym workshop for wāhine that teaches you how to set up and use equipment, along with correct technique for the squat, deadlift, bench and more!

The relaxed one hour sessions are run by Fitness Trainer Shayla and Hillary Scholar Jaimee and come with no expectations. All you need is a gym towel and a ‘give it a go’ attitude!

When: Monday – Thursday, 4.00 – 7.30pm

Where: UniRec High Performance Room

Who: UniRec members

A dedicated space exclusive to female members to workout with privacy and confidence. Sessions run in the evenings, Monday to Thursday, 4.00 – 7.30pm, in the High Performance room. The HP room is fitted with squat racks and lifting platforms and provides all the equipment you need for a full free weights workout.


When: Wednesdays, 12.00 – 1.00pm

Where: UniRec Sports Hall

Who: UoW students and staff, UniRec members

An hour-long sports session open to any female students and staff who want to come give basketball a go. Open to all experience levels with an emphasis on giving it a go, all you need is your student ID!


When: Thursdays, 4.00 – 5.00pm

Where: UniRec Sports Hall

Who: UniRec members

Another hour-long sports session, but open only to UniRec members. All experience levels are welcome with an emphasis on giving it a go!
