Workshop Series, Running for Events – the low down

20 May 2014

Thanks to all of those for coming along to last night’s Running for Events workshop. The team at UniRec say it was great to meet you and help out with your running goals.

So… what happened at the session? We caught up with James Campbell, UniRec’s Health & Fitness Manager who led it.

“We had 15 people attend, all with different running goals. Some members had already done a 5km or 10km fun run, another couple were planning on walking a marathon. We found out that top of mind for everyone in the group was how to structure their training plans.

Fitness trainers James, Sarah and Vonita were happy to lend a hand, talking through the best 12 week training plans which included; developing base fitness, hill climbing, speed work and specialised tips on various distances from 5km - 42km.

“Vonita talked though the ‘7 most common running injuries’ and how to avoid them and at the end of the session everyone had the opportunity to get on a treadmill and a trainer watched them run. Each member walked away with additional tips on how to adapt their individual running style to perform better in training and ultimately, on event day,” James says.

The best news of the session may have been the positive response from members with UniRec putting together a team for the Tough Guy & Gal Challenge in Rotorua on 9 August and Round the Bridges on 16 November. This is open to all members keen to test themselves at two very different running events – off road and an iconic Hamilton road event.

Best of all, there’ll be some team training sessions available in the lead up to the event as well. Watch this space for more updates!

Members interested in attending a FREE Workshop, the next one is '6-PACK ABS' From Keg to 6-Pack - your ‘How-To’ Guide on 30 June. Book in at UniRec Reception.
