How Do I Start?

8 May 2018

Once a fortnight, we will be bringing you bite-sized pieces of information that will help you make informed, sustainable decisions about your health.

Our first post is going to be on establishing a common understanding on health. For almost all, being healthy is the number one reason we’re at a gym. Here at UniRec, we have so many things you can do it’s hard not to be overwhelmed and not know where to start!

The best place to start being healthy is to engage in some form of exercise for 30 minutes a day, 4 times a week. This doesn’t necessarily mean 30 minutes of blood, sweat and tears while blasting the Rocky soundtrack.

Exercise can simply be going for a walk, attending one of our yoga classes, even popping the headphones in and re-watching Friends while on the cross-trainer. For many of us, we spend most of the day sat at a desk, in a lecture theatre or on the couch. 30 minutes of exercise, at a moderate intensity (think a 6/10 difficulty), 4 days a week is the best place to start mitigating those sedentary actions.

Fast-forward 8 weeks: you’ve walked more miles than Forrest Gump on the treadmill, you’ve somehow become the first person to master yoga, and you’ve seen Ross and Rachel get married three times on the cross-trainer...Now what?

You could try one of our 16 group classes, or you could book a consultation with one of our Exercise Consultants (EC’s). Our group classes include Zumba, High Intensity Interval Training, toning, cycling, and step classes; while our EC’s are health specialists who will aide you in reaching your health goals.

So, come down to UniRec, start at only 30-minutes, 4-days a week, and for the first 8-weeks focus not on the weight you’ve dropped, the muscle you’ve gained, the distance you’ve covered; instead focus on creating a habit of exercising. Make exercising part of your lifestyle and the rest of the journey is plain-sailing!
